The northeast monsoon arrives in Penang around November and runs through to February. Every October a flurry of cars come into the bay needing the same handful of jobs — most of which would have been easier (and cheaper) to handle in September. So we wrote up the checklist and now we send it to anyone on our books a few weeks ahead.
1. Headlamp clarity
Cloudy lenses cut roughly 40% of the light output. On a wet road at night that is a real safety issue, not a cosmetic one. If you can see any haze under direct sun, book a restoration before the rains start. The UV sealer we use takes a full day to cure properly — not something to schedule when it is bucketing down.
2. Wiper blades
Most wipers in Malaysia are six months past their best. A streaky blade is annoying in light rain and dangerous in a downpour. Replace as a pair, check both arms apply even pressure, and consider an arm with a beam-style blade for the driver side if you cover a lot of motorway miles.
3. Windscreen sealant or hydrophobic glass coat
A good hydrophobic coat sheds rain at speeds above 60 km/h without wipers at all — which transforms night driving on the North-South Expressway. Re-apply every six months or book the studio's hydrophobic glass treatment, which lasts about a year and a half in our climate.
4. Door and boot seals
Rubber seals harden in tropical heat. By their fifth year many cars in Penang have small gaps that admit fine spray during heavy rain — which then sits in the door card or boot well and rots wiring looms. Wipe the seals clean and condition with a silicone-free rubber dressing. If a seal is visibly cracked, replace it now.
5. Brake disc condition
This is not technically a detail job, but discs that have started to corrode at the edges will judder under the first heavy rain when water sits on them overnight. If you have heard any pulsing through the pedal recently, get the discs checked — easier in October than during the December rush.
6. Hydrophobic coat on the paint
If you are running a ceramic, this is when to schedule the annual booster coat. If you are running a sealant or wax, refresh it now so the paint sheds tropical rain properly through the worst months. Cars without protection will spot heavily after every downpour — and spotting that is left long enough etches into the clearcoat.
Bring the car in for a free pre-monsoon walkaround
Every October we run free 20-minute walkarounds for owners on our books. We check the items above, take a couple of photos, and send you a written summary — no pressure to book anything. Drop us a line if you'd like to schedule one.
